The AOpen 1845 is a
strange set up. It's running off an
Intel
2.2 GHz CPU which was a surprise to me
because the highest mobile CPU available at time of
writing was a 1GHz.
After a bit of an investigation I
discovered that AOpen use run of the mill CPUs in their
notebooks. That's right - there's no mobile Pentium 4 in this machine
- it's the standard CPU that's found in desktop computers.
I'm not sure how they accomplished
this
because overheating is always an issue in notebooks,
but
the AOpen 1845 runs perfectly and it didn't crash or
blue
screen on us once. It's little surprise that no CPU in this super test
came even close to this monster in the
benchmark scores other than the Digitec that uses the
same
processor.
It's in reference to this that we
recommend this machine to those users that need a
portable processing power house. If you're going to be
crunching big numbers or work on enormous spread
sheets while you're on the road, then the AOpen 1845 is going to be
your perfect partner. If you're questioning this,
take
a look at how quickly it crunches SETI WUs.
Video wise, the AOpen runs off a 32Mb Mobility
Radeon which isn't as good as the nVidia cards but
scored reasonably well in the benchmark stakes. This is a video
card that will allow you to play many of the latest
games
and, if the card's battling, the CPU does step in and
assist
Clarity wise, the picture quality on screen was excellent and
amongst the best in this supertest
If AOpen decide that it's time to slap a GeForce into their systems,
they'll have the fastest notebook on the market. On yet another
positive note, the battery in this machine was also extremely solid
which was somewhat surprising since it's using a normal
CPU.
We thought it would drain power quicker than the
mobile CPUs but it didn't, and clocked in at a respectable 3 hours 13
minutes in Battery Mark. Impressive all round. |
